A bit farther up the coast from Brunswick lies the historic town of
Darien, the second oldest planned town in the state of Georgia.
Darien originally began as the British outpost Fort King George, led by Colonel John Barnwell, also known as "Tuscarora Jack." As a
result of the incredible hardships Colonel Barnwell and his men
endured, they abandoned the fort, leaving it to be occupied later in
1736 by General James Oglethorpe and a group of Scottish Highlanders who began establishing
the settlement of Darien.
Historic Fort King George can still be visited today. Various
tours and historical reenactments take place throughout the year. For
further information, call (912) 437-4770.
Today, the commercial fishing industry is one of Darien's largest
employers. You can see the maritime fishing and shrimping vessels lined
up across the waterfront dock. Due to Georgia's mild climate, fresh
seafood is available here all year round.
Aside from commercial fishing, recreational boating and fishing are a
favorite pastime in Darien. There are also numerous historical sites
and buildings to visit throughout the region, such as the old Tabby
Ruins originally built c.1815-1830 and St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church
which was built by former slaves in1876 and currently continues to have
an active congregation.
The local festivities which take place here throughout the year,
celebrating the great heritage of this historic town, will appeal to
all ages. The Blessing of the Fleet is held each year in April and attracts approximately 70,000 visitors!
