Cumberland Island National Park Service

 - Cumberland Island made up of salt marshes, dune fields, tidal creeks and maritime forests is home to an abundance of wildlife including wild horses, wild turkeys, armadillos, a variety of shore birds, sea turtles and more. Enjoy a relaxing day at the beach or feel free to explore the island's various historic structures and exhibits. The island is only accessible by boat and reservations
can be made by contacting the Mainland Visitor Information Center in St. Marys, Georgia which is open all year 8:15 am. - 4:30 pm.. When you visit the island plan to bring all the supplies you will need with you including food, water and trash bags.

The Dungeness Historic District

 - A prehistoric shell midden which was used
later on as a foundation for mansions
which were built on it.

 - An historic cemetery

 - A wharf which may have been the site of
the early Spanish mission of San Pedro.

 - A 19th century tabby house.

 - The ruins of Dungeness which was built on
the site of the previous Miner residence.

 - The Ice House Museum located at the Dungeness Dock: Displays of artifacts and photos of the island's history beginning with the Native Americans and on through the Carnegie Era.

  - Bathrooms and water fountains are also located here.

The Stafford Plantation Historic District

 - 1901 Stafford House built for William
Coleman Carnegie

 - Stafford Plantation Cemetery

Plum Orchard Historic District

 - Plum Orchard Mansion built in 1898 for
George Lauder Carnegie.

 - A small cememtery.

 - Ruins of an early 19th century plantation
home.

The High Point - Half Moon Bluff Historic District

 - This district is made up of two clusters of buildings located at the northern end of the island. The Half Moon Bluff which was settled by former plantation slaves from plantations on the island lived in small wooden cottages there. over the years as the land continued to be divided more African Americans purchased parcels. In 1937, the First African Baptist Church of Cumberland Island was built and became the center for worship and education in the community. The HIgh Point District, which is the other section, was built in 1880 as a hotel and resort facility. The residents of the Half Moon Bluff village were hired as the workers for the hotel and resort at the High Point District.

Mainland Museum Building Located in St. Mary's Georgia

Open year-round 1:00 pm. - 4:00 pm.

 - The museum located about two blocks from the waterfront on Osborne street hosts exhibits of historical artifacts from the Native Americans, African Americans, the Carnegie family and others who inhabited the island. There are also displays
depicting life on the barrier islands.
