St. Simons Island

St. Simons Island oceanfront homes

  • A tour of St. Simons just wouldn't be complete without experiencing a ghost walk to visit some of St. Simons Island's oldest and more illusive residents. One of the island's most famous resident ghosts is Mary the Wanderer, a beautiful young girl with long flowing hair and sorrowful eyes who roams the beaches at the south end of the island with a lantern in her hand, held high, still waiting and watching for her lover to return from the mainland. Sometimes appearing in a white shroud-like garment and other times on horseback, sightings of Mary have been reported by a number of eyewitnesses in various locations throughout the island. Another one of the island's more intriguing tales takes place at Dunbar Creek, where a boatload of slaves from Nigeria landed one fateful day. While chained together to be taken to the cotton fields for a lifetime of servitude, their leader rallied them to take extreme action by having them all turn toward the nearby stream and march in chanting, "the water brought us and the water will take us away." They all drowned themselves rather than be subjected to a life of slavery. Legend has it that you can still hear the moaning, chanting and rattling of chains there from time to time and there are those who make sure to avoid it altogether. But others are intrigued and drawn to the islands by the legends and lore that make the Golden Isles unique.
