Old Dungeness Ruins

Pictured above are the ruins of the elegant old Dungeness mansion, once owned by members of the Carnegie Family.  It was here that the Carnegie's were renown for holding extravagant galas for entertaining their high society guests. Legend has it that at one such gala, long ago, a carriage filled with guests heading towards the party suffered a fatal accident. Since then, the creaking sound of wooden wheels coming down the driveway has been heard from time to time, and some folks say it's the ghosts of the lost souls that were killed in the accident still trying to get to the party.

Cumberland Island offers many attractions and endless exploration for those interested in the history of the region.

The Dungeness Historic District:
  •  A prehistoric shell midden which was later used as a foundation for mansions that were built on it.
  •  An historic cemetery
  •  A wharf which may have been the site of the early Spanish mission of San Pedro.
  •  A 19th century tabby house.
  •  The ruins of Dungeness were built on the site of the previous Miner residence.
  •  The Ice House Museum located at the Dungeness Dock: Displays of artifacts and photos of the island's history beginning with the Native Americans and on through the Carnegie Era.
  - Bathrooms and water fountains are also located here.

The Stafford Plantation Historic District
  • 1901 Stafford House built for William Coleman Carnegie
  •  Stafford Plantation Cemetery
Plum Orchard Historic District
  •  Plum Orchard Mansion built in 1898 for George Lauder Carnegie.
  •  A small cemetery.
  •  Ruins of an early 19th century plantation home.
The High Point - Half Moon Bluff Historic District
  • This district is made up of two clusters of buildings located at the northern end of the island. The Half Moon Bluff village, settled by former slaves from plantations on the island, is represented by small wooden cottages. Over the years, as the land continued to be divided, more African Americans purchased parcels. In 1937, the First African Baptist Church of Cumberland Island was built and became the center for worship and education in the community. The other section, the Hgh Point District, was built in 1880 as a hotel and resort facility. Many residents of the Half Moon Bluff village were hired to work for the hotel and resort.
