Brunswick, Ga. (October 27, 2006) - The City of Brunswick
Public Works Department recently received the Public Education Program
of the Year Award from the Georgia Association of Water Professionals
(GAWP).
The City of Brunswick Public Works Department instituted a wide
range of educational programs for 2006. Among those was the
Popcorn and Jumbo, "The Shrimp Guy's," radio commercial campaign
informing area citizens of the importance of protecting our coastal
environment from pollution. The promotion ran on local area radio
stations, and was so successful that planning is in the works to
develop print and TV ads to support the program. The multimedia
presentations will use characters designed by a local area student, 9
year old Rovin Simmons, who submitted her drawings as part of an art
contest conducted in the local public schools, and co-sponsored by the
Golden Isles Arts & Humanities Association.
Other programs included a spring landscaping class that was
attended by almost 100 people at the Old City Hall, brochures, and a
website that included information on storm water issues. The
website can be accessed through the City of Brunswick website at
www.brunswickga.org and clicking the Public Works link, or by going
directly to the Public Works website at www.publicworksbrunswickga.org .
Over 100 of the top water and wastewater municipalities in the
State were eligible to participate in this annual competition. This
evaluation process includes a comprehensive evaluation by independent
judges and experts from within the fields of science, education, and
public relations.
"We are proud to recognize the City of Brunswick Public Works
Department's outstanding efforts to educate and inform their citizens
on the importance of safe drinking water and water resource protection,"
said Jack Dozier, Executive Director of the Georgia Association of
Water Professionals. The City of Brunswick Public Works Department is
to be commended for setting the example for every other municipality in
the state.
