Darien, Georgia

Darien originally began as the British outpost Fort King George which was led by Colonel John Barnwell also known as "Tuscarora Jack." As a result of the incredible hardships Colonel Barnwell and his men endured, they abandoned the fort, leaving it to be occupied later in 1736 by General James Oglethorpe and a group of Scottish Highlanders he had brought with him to the area.

These tabby ruins, formerly built c.1815-1830 are reminders of the cotton exchanges, warehouses and naval stores which once flourished here when Darien was one of the leading commercial ports for the export of cotton, rice and timber.
