On July 7, 1742, an outnumbered force of British Troops defended Georgia against a Spanish invasion at a site located near Fort Frederica (located on St. Simons Island) known as the "Battle of Bloody Marsh." At this famous battle site, the British troops defeated the Spanish invaders and kept them from attacking the nearby fort, thus driving them back into Florida.

A bit further up the coast from St. Simons Island lies the historic town of Darien which began as the British outpost Fort King George, led by Colonel John Barnwell also known as "Tuscarora Jack." Fort King George can still be visited today and various tours and reenactments are offered throughout the year.

These are but a few of the many historical legacies left as reminders of the rich cultural heritage from which the Golden Isles has emerged.
